"Our situations will be ephemeral, without a future. Passageways. Our only concern is real life; we care nothing about the permanence of art or of anything else. Eternity is the grossest idea a person can conceive of in connection with his acts.”

Guy Debord

Three weaves, linen thread with carbonized gault beads, grass and weeds and wood. A floor pattern formed with flower petals plucked last summer. A rabbit skin from a rabbit raised, then killed and eaten last summer.

A great rotten tree was about to fall on the house, so we cut it down. The pattern in its wood grain once felled was unusually beautiful, mutated by the fungus that infected it. That tree was killed by its own beauty.

Primitive relationships to past lives we never knew, are formed by connecting with that which they have touched. This could be an elaborate construction of cloth and clay, or the whispered pathos filled utterances of those who knew them in life. We form a material based portrait in our minds, its final touches finished with objects at hand. We stand back and admire our handiwork, but its impermanence fosters confusion and instability. A new perception must be built. In each portrait another is formed as we loose sight of its predecessor’s withering countenance. From these many more will come. Their situations are all ephemeral.
